Light snow is currently forecast in several parts of Surrey
Parts of Surrey could see snow or sleet over the weekend as the county gets a temporary break from the rain.
Following seemingly incessant rainfall for many parts of Surrey there will be a shift in conditions at the end of the week.
Outbreaks of rain on Thursday (February 12) and early Friday (February 13) will turn into sleet and snow initially over higher levels but then to lower elevations too for a time.
The forecast for Saturday (February 14) suggests that high pressure will remain largely in charge of the conditions, leading to a rainless day for many with the prospect of sunshine.
In Guildford and Woking long spells of sun are expected between 8am and 11am, with no rain forecast for the rest of the day. Temperatures will still be cold peaking at around 5C and getting down to 0C.
From Sunday, there is an anticipated return to more Atlantic-dominated conditions as a weather front sweeps in from the west, bringing rain, strong winds and snow across some northern areas.
As of Thursday morning the Met Office is forecasting light snow in Haslemere, Leatherhead, Dorking and Caterham between the hours of 6am and 7am.
During this time temperatures are set to be around freezing. In the rest of the county, including Guildford and Woking sleet is expected.
Jason Kelly is a Met Office chief forecaster. He said: “Any settling snow will mainly be confined to high ground. Locations of above 200 metres in Scotland and northern England may see 2-5cm of snow, but those locations above 300 metres may see double those amounts, up to 10 cm.
“As the rain and snow clears south, temperatures will fall quickly under the clear skies which could lead to ice forming on untreated surfaces.”
Despite the slightly drier forecast, the effects of heavy rain are still being felt across Surrey. A flood warning remains in place for areas of Chertsey, where there have been high river levels all week. Flood alerts are in place across the River Wey and River Thames.
