The Sandman Netflix series cast, release date, trailer and what we know so far

Netflix has a well-established presence in Surrey with its permanent home at Shepperton Studios, and it seems many of the producers for its shows are starting to look to the county as a filming location.

Recent productions to shoot scenes in Surrey include Bridgerton and The Dig, and it;s heavily rumoured that The Sandman is the next Netflix show to be filming here.

It was understood to be filming at Guildford Cathedral in February and again in March. While there was no confirmation of this from those involved in the project, rumours were rife on social media.

Stephen Fry recently announced he is the newest addition to the cast of Netflix, Warner Bros and DC Entertainment production The Sandman.

Also among the cast are Game of Thrones ‘ Gwendoline Christie and Sweetbitter’s Tom Sturridge.

But who else is in the series, what are their roles and has The Sandman been made before?

What is The Sandman?

The Sandman is a comic book series by author Neil Gaiman, who is also involved in producing the Netflix adaptation.

It’s both a dark fantasy and a horror. It has been described as a story about stories.

It’s about Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams (portrayed by Tom Sturridge) who is captured and learns that change can be inevitable.

The exact plot details are being kept under wraps, however Gaiman has said the first two volumes of the comic book series will be adapted for the first season. The first series will be 11 episodes long.

The cast

Stephen Fry is the latest addition and he will be playing the role of Gilbert. He appears earlier in the season despite being late to the original cast.

Tom Sturridge will play Dream. Dream takes on many names in the series, including Morpheus, but he is cast simply as ‘Dream’.

Former Game of Thrones actor Gwendoline Christie will portray Lucifer.

It’s not the first time a fictional Lucifer has been attached to Guildford Cathedral as The Omen famously used the Cathedral as a filming set too with The Devil’s son Damien turning feral outside its doors.

The Sandman will also star Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, another Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Asim Chaudhry as Abel and Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain.

Has it been adapted before?

The adaptation is a long time coming as there were numerous attempts to adapt the comic books, which were published by Gaiman from 1989 to 1996.

The most recent attempt was from Warner Bros, who are now involved in the Netflix production of The Sandman, in 2014 when Joseph Gordon-Levitt was set to direct and possibly star in the film.

It was to be written by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child co-writer Jack Thorne. Immediately after Eric Heisserer rewrote it, Gordon-Levitt dropped out due to creative differences with Warner Bros.

Heisserer said the production would suit a TV series rather than a film, which appears to be the direction Warner Bros has taken.
