Guildford Lidl construction work gets under way at former Curry’s PC World site

Lidl continues to press ahead with plans to create its first ever supermarket in Guildford and construction has begun.

Building work is under way in Unit 1, Woodbridge Road, as the German supermarket chain transforms the former Curry’s PC World site after it made the short hop across the River Wey to Ladymead retail park.

A banner outside the vacant development, just off the A25, currently says: “We’re cracking on with your new store.”

An application for internally illuminated signs for the new premises was recently granted by Guildford Borough Council (GBC) subject to conditions.

Lidl has more than 800 stores across Britain, with the current nearest sites to the new store being in Farnham, Aldershot, Dorking and Leatherhead.

Cllr John Redpath, lead councillor for economy at GBC, has welcomed the progress on supermarket and the potential benefits it will bring.

He said: “It’s great to hear we have Guildford’s first Lidl supermarket opening near our town centre soon. We welcome the new store to Woodbridge Road.

“Bringing jobs and adding another option for our grocery shopping, it will benefit our residents and those working near the town centre.

“The site is accessible and has plenty of parking for those doing a larger shop and is also a short walk or cycle away for residents living in Stoughton and Westborough.”

There are 30 locations where Lidl would like to open new stores across Surrey, with Guildford featuring on that list.
