Emergency response teams deployed after sinkhole closes road in Albury

A large sinkhole has closed a road in Albury.

Emergency response teams were sent to the A248 Sherbourne on Friday (July 24) after the “large void” appeared in the highway.

Surrey County Council’s (SCC) highways team has urged motorists to “avoid the area” and to follow the diversion routes which run through the centre of Guildford.

Although the incident is being dealt with as an “emergency”, it is not known when the road will reopen.

A tweet from Guildford Joint Committee, run by SCC and Guildford Borough Council, read: “Major incident on the bridge over the River Tillingbourne.

“We are currently mobilising our emergency response teams to close the road due to a large void appearing in the highway.

“Please avoid the area and use the posted diversion routes which go through the centre of Guildford.”
