Debenhams in Guildford, Woking, Crawley and Sutton among those reopening for closing down sale

Debenhams stores in Surrey are among those reopening next week – but only for a final closing down sale.

The chain’s Guildford and Woking branches – along with nearby Crawley and Sutton – will open their doors from Monday (April 12) as part of a final stock liquidation process.

It is the date when non-essential retailers across England and Wales are allowed to reopen as part of the continued road map out of lockdown.

The sale will see reductions of up to 70% off fashion and home products, and up to 50% off beauty and fragrance lines.

A Debenhams spokesman said: “This is the last chance for customers in England and Wales to visit their local Debenhams before sadly our stores close for good.

“We will be reopening with a fantastic range of offers and discounts across all of our customers’ favourite brands and products.

“Stocks are limited and expected to sell out quickly so customers should visit their nearest store quickly to avoid disappointment.

“We are very grateful for the efforts of our staff who have worked so hard throughout the most difficult of circumstances to keep the business trading.”

Debenhams in Guildford has already been given a new name as discussions over its future use begin.

The site in Guildford town centre will now be referred to as St Mary’s Wharf – a nod to its former industrial use – with a view to changing its use and developing early proposals for its redevelopment.

Debenhams says the reopened branches will continue to trade “for a limited number of weeks” until the stock in the stores is fully cleared.

The stores will then start to close permanently from 2 May, with the stock clearance completed and final stores expected to close by 15 May.

When the Guildford and Woking shops close for good, they will join the Staines and Walton branches in vanishing from Surrey’s high streets.

Debenhams in Walton shut in January 2020, with Staines following a few months later.
