The A3 Hindhead Tunnel will be closed for 18 nights from next week as it undergoes work which will upgrade technology within the tunnel.
The busy section of road is the UK’s longest land tunnel and carries traffic crossing the Surrey and Hampshire border. From Thursday (October 29) diversions will be in place during overnight closures.
The tunnel will be closed between 9pm and 9am, on one side each night, for 18 nights on weekdays only. The Hindhead Tunnel northbound will close for seven nights between 9pm and 9am, only on weekdays meaning it will be shut Thursday and Friday nights then again each night from Monday to Friday the following week.

From Wednesday, November 11 the tunnel will be closed southbound for a further eight nights, on weekdays only. A third closure will then begin on Monday, November 23 as the northbound tunnel again closes for three nights.
During the closures, northbound traffic will be diverted via the A325 (Longmoor), B3004 (Kingsley to Alton) and A31 towards Guildford.
Southbound traffic will be diverted along the A31 (to Alton), B3004 (Alton to Kingsley) and A325 (to Longmoor).
